Where to Stay in Drass During a Kargil Road Trip?

Ladakh Bike Trips – Reccy

Drass is typically considered a stop on the route to Kargil; however, after travelling through the area, I discovered that spending one night here might significantly slow down a road journey. Situated approximately 60 kilometres from Kargil on the Srinagar–Leh route, the town serves as a crucial stop for travellers travelling between Srinagar and Kargil. With views of famous sites like Tololing and Tiger Hill, it is also near the Kargil War Memorial.

The majority of hotels in Kargil for a Drass trip are simple hotels, guest houses, government accommodations, or family-run homestays. That actually suits a road trip quite well. After hours on the highway, I would rather have a warm room, dinner nearby and an easy start the next morning than spend the evening looking for a fancy property.

Staying in Drass town

The most practical choice for a road trip is probably to remain close to the main Drass settlement. In addition to making it simpler to depart early for Kargil or go toward Srinagar, this keeps travellers close to neighbourhood restaurants, the highway, and essential services.

One of the well-known lodging choices in Drass is Hotel D’ Meadows Ladakh, which is especially practical for visitors who like to stay close to the main tourist destination. According to current listings, it is also one of the most well-liked lodging choices in Drass.

For those travelling by car, motorcycle or cab, Hotel Stago Ladakh is conveniently located on NH1. When Drass is just one overnight stop on a longer road trip to Kargil, there is less needless detouring because it is directly along the highway.

Drass Guest House Hotel and Restaurant is situated near the market area for a more straightforward and regional option. Travellers who would rather have food and daily necessities close at hand than avoid the settlement may find this useful.

Drass hotels near the Kargil War Memorial

Instead of choosing a home in the heart of Drass, it makes sense to look toward Bhimbat and the surrounding area if visiting the Kargil War Memorial is one of the primary reasons for staying overnight.

Because Tololing Eco Resort is directly across from the War Memorial, it is very convenient for visitors who wish to see the memorial without having to make an additional drive. Another popular one of the hotels in Kargil is D ROYAL LADAKH, which is located on Army Supply Road close to the War Memorial. When the road trip itinerary includes Bhimbat, the memorial, and the surrounding mountain views, its location can be helpful.

Homestays in Drass for a more local stay

Moreover, Drass has surprisingly many homestays spread across the valley’s neighbourhoods. These homestays are in areas such as Goshan, Gindiyal, Khunda, Dandal, Thasgam, and Khiber.

Travellers seeking a cosier, family-operated accommodation option might explore Khayul Homestay. The broader Drass area has additional accommodations such as Drass Homestay and Ibrahim Homestay Drass.

If the goal of the overnight stay extends beyond merely resting, I would consider a homestay. It introduces a slightly slower rhythm to the trip, especially when there is time to eat and observe the valley’s local life.

Final thoughts on suitable Drass stays

A luxurious stay in Drass isn’t always required for a road trip to Kargil. The property’s location, temperature, accessibility, and alignment with the day’s driving itinerary can be more significant. While hotels in Drass town centre are convenient, particularly those near the War Memorial, homestays offer a cosier experience.

It is prudent to verify the room, heating, hot water, meals, and road access before leaving, as accommodation availability and amenities can fluctuate with the seasons. These helpful details are far more crucial than an extensive list of hotel amenities in a high-elevation area such as Drass.
